Preparation Tips

5 Key Strategies for TCF Reading

Essential techniques to maximize your compréhension écrite score.

Use free navigation strategically

Unlike listening, you can go back to any question. Skip difficult passages and return to them later — don't waste time on C1–C2 questions if you haven't answered all B1–B2 ones.

Time management: ~1.5 min per question

With 39 questions in 60 minutes, you have roughly 1.5 minutes per question. Don't spend more than 2 minutes on any single question — flag it and move on.

Read questions FIRST, then skim

Read the questions and answer choices before reading the passage. This tells you what to look for and saves time.

Watch for paraphrases, not exact matches

TCF reading answers rarely use the exact same words as the passage. Look for synonyms, rephrased ideas, and implied meaning.

Build reading speed with French texts

Read French news articles, blogs, and books regularly. The more exposure you have to written French, the faster you'll read on test day.
