6 Key Strategies for TCF Writing Success
Expert advice to maximize your expression écrite score on test day.
Respect word count limits
Writing too few words signals a lower proficiency level and can result in an automatic downgrade. Stay within the specified range for each task.
Task 3: Reference BOTH documents
The argued text must engage with both reference documents. Ignoring one document or only superficially mentioning it will significantly lower your score.
Use formal register (vouvoiement)
For TCF Canada and Tout Public, use formal French (vous). For TCF IRN, informal register (tu) is acceptable in Task 1 depending on context.
Structure your responses clearly
For Task 3 especially: introduction → body paragraphs with arguments → conclusion. Clear structure demonstrates B2–C1 level organization skills.
Manage your time wisely
Suggested time allocation: Task 1 (10 min) → Task 2 (15 min) → Task 3 (25 min). Leave 10 minutes for review and corrections.
Vary your vocabulary and grammar
Avoid repeating the same words and sentence structures. Use synonyms, connectors (cependant, néanmoins, par conséquent), and varied sentence types.
Writing Across TCF Variants
