Exam Format

TCF Speaking: 3 Tasks, Face-to-Face Interview

The expression orale is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner (or AI on our platform). Three tasks test your speaking from basic conversation to structured argumentation.

Task 1: Personal Interview

2 min · No preparation

The examiner asks you personal questions about your life, work, studies, and interests. Tests your ability to communicate basic information naturally.

Task 2: Role-Play Scenario

2 min prep + 3.5 min interaction

You receive a scenario card and must play a role — for example, making a complaint, negotiating, or solving a problem. Tests your ability to interact in a specific context.

Task 3: Express & Defend Opinion

4.5 min · No preparation

The examiner presents a topic and asks your opinion. You must state your position, support it with arguments and examples, and respond to counterarguments.

Preparation Tips

5 Key Strategies for TCF Speaking

Expert advice to maximize your expression orale score on test day.

Use ALL your prep time for Task 2

You get 2 minutes to prepare for the role-play scenario. Use every second to plan your approach, key phrases, and how to start the conversation.

Structure Task 3 responses clearly

Follow this structure: state your opinion → give argument 1 with example → give argument 2 with example → conclude. This demonstrates B2–C1 level organization.

Don't memorize scripts

Examiners are trained to detect memorized responses and will adjust their questions to break your script. Practice speaking naturally and adapting to unexpected questions.

Fluency > perfect grammar

Examiners value natural, flowing speech more than perfect grammar. A few minor errors in an otherwise fluent response scores higher than halting, overly careful speech.

Practice with diverse topics

Task 3 topics range from technology and environment to education and society. Practice forming opinions and arguments on a wide variety of current issues.
